Hardy Silex no 1, Vintage Fly Fishing Reel Circa 1905 – SOLD

Beautiful Scarce Hardy “The Silex” No 1 casting reel 4″ Diameter,┬áapprox CIRCA 1905.┬á An intriguing reel with cut away rim, 3 rim controls, Brass brake leaver, caged spool, twin ivorine handles, stunning patina retaining much of its lead finish, No Cracks, or repairs, unfiled smooth brass foot. Comes with original Hardy Bro’s box that has all the character of a 110yr old box!

For those not familiar with this reel you will notice the cut away rim. This is not a defect but an innovation from Hardy allowing the fisherman to use his fingers or palm to apply manual drag to the spool when fighting a trophy salmon.

There is a “W” stamped on the inside of the real body, indicating its maker Jackei Waugh who worked for Hardy between 1893-1916

This is a large reel that is plenty capable of fighting huge salmon and for those living in South Africa stick it on glass and go fight a mud salmon aka carp or tigerfish or a Leerie , heck live a little and take it to sea, Nubian flats, Seychelles  etc :).

Reasonable offers will be considered.
