Hardy The Silex no 1, Vintage Fly Fishing Reel 4 1/4″, Circa 1902-1904 – SOLD

An excellent condition very rare Hardy “The Silex” No 1 casting reel 4 1/4″ (Spool is 1 11/16″ wide),  CIRCA 1902-1904. RHW. Not many around with the twin ivorine handles connected by a crossbar. An intriguing reel with cut away rim.

Three rim controls
Caged spool,
No Cracks, or repairs, small scratched on the face plate (see pics),
Retaining much of its gun metal lead finish
Full length smooth unfiled brass foot.

There is no reel makers initials stamped inside, perhaps William Dingley forgot to stamp this one 🙂.  Comes with line of unknown type or capacity.

For those not familiar with this reel you will notice the cut away rim. This is not a defect but an innovation from Hardy allowing the fisherman to use his fingers or palm to apply manual drag to the spool when fighting a trophy salmon.

This is a large reel that is plenty capable of fighting huge salmon and for those living in South Africa stick it on glass and go fight a mud salmon aka carp or tigerfish or a Leerie , heck live a little and take it to sea, Nubian flats, Seychelles etc :).

Price is great as they are for sale for £480

Reasonable offers will be considered.
